The story was adapted from a radio play, Three Blind Mice, written for the Royal family in 1947. The stage play had to be renamed on the insistence of another producer, Emile Littler, who had used the name on stage before the Second World War, and it was Agatha Christie’s son-in-law, Anthony Hicks who suggested the new title. In fact, it refers to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, in which Hamlet cryptically calls the play depicting the murder of the king, ‘The Mousetrap’. So in Hamlet, The Murder of Gonzago is a metaphorical mousetrap to catch a murderer. Christie's play is also about catching a murderer, and that makes The Mousetrap a good allusive title for it. The connection with the thematic mice of the original radio play makes it particularly fitting. So why was the original play called Three Blind Mice to begin with? The murderer in the play sets out to kill three people; since they can't see what's coming, and don't know why they are going to be killed, and two of them end up trapped in a snowed-in house, they are blind mice. The nursery rhyme is thematically apt to the story, and is used as a motif throughout the play. Christie was fond of using nursery rhymes as titles and themes for her work.

The Mousetrap has been running continuously since 1957, the longest initial run of any play in history. The case made national and international headlines and led to the creation of provisions to protect children from neglect and cruelty. When he was ten years old, Terence O'Neill testified in the manslaughter case against his foster parents. The two suffered from beating and neglect, and later that year, Dennis died at the age of 12 from injuries he had sustained. Terence O'Neill and his brother, Dennis, were taken to a foster home in 1945 on the Shropshire, England farm of Reginald and Esther Gough.

The play was originally broadcast on BBC radio on 30 May 1947 as an 80th birthday present for Queen Mary, the wife of King George V. It was first entitled Three Blind Mice, or, Monkswell Manners as the original prompt book, held by the V&A, shows. This change for the expanded stage version avoided a clash with a play of the same name. The ‘three blind mice’ motif recurs throughout the play, in the form of melodic snatches of the gruesome nursery rhyme. The prompt copy, which served the production for twelve years, features, among the many doodles and in-jokes, numerous cartoon figures of mice.

The idea for the radio play came, as was often the case with Christie, from a real-life news story in 1945 about two brothers abused in foster care, one of whom died as a result. The radio play was first broadcast on the BBC in 1947. Agatha Christie then adapted the 30-minute radio play in 1948 to a short story, published in May in Cosmopolitan magazine, and later in the 1950 US collection Three Blind Mice and Other Stories. The short story version was never published in the UK on Christie’s insistence that it should not clash with the 1952 stage adaptation, famously renamed The Mousetrap. As long as the adaptation ran in London’s West End the short story wasn’t to be published. Snowed in, the residents of a guest house find themselves trapped with a murderer. This story would later become the famous play, The Mousetrap.
