It seems like it has been down for planned maintenance all of this year. I just wondered if any locals know what’s going on with it. If it will be back some day. Does anyone know what has happened to Ice Blast.

The ride, a 210 foot shot tower which catapults riders skywards at 80mph, has been closed for the 2024 season and fans of the ride have spotted that work has been taking place. Now, the Blackpool attraction has revealed exactly what it has in store – and it marks the end of Ice Blast as we know it. New for the 2025 season, the ride is being reimagined and re-themed, and will re-open under the name ‘Launch Pad.’ Amanda Thompson OBE, CEO of Pleasure Beach Resort, said: “Earlier this year we announced that we are focusing on constantly evolving and renewing our ride offering, and confirmed our intention to make some exciting announcements in the future. The new era of Launch Pad is only the first, and we’re looking forward to everything the future holds at Pleasure Beach Resort.” The ride was re-named Ice Blast after its sponsorship changed to Tango in 2000, and has operated under that name until now.

On the day in which the 2024 season began, the 2nd March 2024, Amanda Thompson, Director of Pleasure Beach Resort announced that the ride would be closed for the majority of the 2024 season. This is due to a fault on the ride which means a part is broken. The park is awaiting a new part, and all branding was removed as well as the queue rails. The ride was closed for the 2024 season, and is set to reopen with a new name - Launch Pad for the 2025 season. The ride has been repainted to a blue colour scheme, with red accents. The ride is set to receive new theming and branding as well as a new pressure cylinder, thrusting riders with more force than experienced in recent years.

The 210-foot-tall shot tower, which catapults riders towards the sky at 80mph, has been closed for the 2024 season, with work visibly taking place. Amanda Thompson OBE, CEO of Pleasure Beach Resort, said: “Earlier this year we announced that we are focusing on constantly evolving and renewing our ride offering, and confirmed our intention to make some exciting announcements in the future. Karl Murphy, director of engineering at Pleasure Beach Resort, added: “A new cylinder might not sound much on paper, but it will make a huge difference in terms of the ride experience. The ride will reopen as Launch Pad. In addition to the new theming and name, the attraction has been given a new pressure cylinder to transform the ride experience, thrusting riders with even more force. Launch Pad is expected to be open for Pleasure Beach Resort’s 2025 season, which starts on 2 March.

Ice Blast, which closed for refurbishment last year, will also reopen this year as Launch Pad. The ride will keep the original format, shooting seated riders vertically into the sky, but will be more thrilling, immersive and dynamic, the park said.

Lots of people have noticed the maintenance that has been happening on our Ice Blast ride, which has been closed this season. The work is still ongoing but we'd encourage everyone to keep their eyes peeled for updates over the coming weeks. In March, the resort’s chief executive Amanda Thompson asked people on X not to listen to ridiculous rumours, adding that the ride would be operating later this season we are awaiting parts. Pictures have been uploaded to social media this week showing scaffolding up and workers surrounding the 210ft ride, with speculation that it’s being taken down and refurbished before being returned to the park.

ICE BLAST is closed for planned maintenance. Sometimes, our rides need routine maintenance which can put them out of normal operation. Where we can, we’ll always update this page with any closures so you can plan to visit us when your favourite rides are available. Occasionally, some rides might need to close at short notice. We recommend downloading the Pleasure Beach Resort app to see our live ride availability and queue times.
