Some historians believe the origin of the words to ‘Three Blind Mice’ lie with the English queen Mary I, known as Bloody Mary because of the hundreds of religious dissenters she had burned at the stake. The three religious leaders supporting Edward during this time were the bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley and the ever-loyal Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, architect of Henry VIII’s English Reformation. Unluckily for them, Edward only lasted six years. When Mary I finally ascended the throne in 1553, the bitter queen immediately set about restoring the Catholic faith as the religion of England and the real blood-letting began. The most high-profile of these victims, later remembered as the ‘Oxford Martyrs’, were Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer, who were tortured, some stories say blinded, and then burned at the stake in central Oxford in front of hundreds of shocked spectators. While authorship of the rhyme is a matter of dispute, what is generally accepted is that ‘Three Blind Mice’ refers to the brutal slaying of the three bishops opposed to Queen Mary’s religious reforms, one of whom had made the mistake of dissolving her mother’s marriage to King Henry VIII and reducing her status from princess to commoner.

The author of this nursery rhyme remains unknown, it first appeared in print in 1609. The mice are believed to be three Protestant loyalists who were accused of plotting against Queen Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary” due to her penchant for torture including burning of hundreds of Protestants at the stake as she worked to return England to Catholicism. Needless to say, these 3 men were also burned alive at the stake. Known as the Oxford Martyrs, Ridley, Latimer and Cranmer where not blind in the true sense of the word, but this referred to their Protestantism. Now these words alone are quite horrid when you think about it. Historians often like to trace the heritage of nursey rhymes back to an important event in time and “Three Blind Mice” is no exception.

Peta argue that old nursery rhymes need to be updated to remove language which encourages cruelty to animals and have given some examples. Attitudes toward animals have changed a lot in the hundreds of years since many nursery rhymes were written. In a version of Three Blind Mice modified by Peta, they do not have their tails carved off by the farmer’s wife in the updated version, but actually thank her for saving their lives. Animals are intelligent individuals capable of joy and suffering, they’re not ours to exploit, and our language must evolve to reflect this. Peta has suggested changes to remove language that encourages cruelty to animals, and has given examples of modified nursery rhymes.
