Why did Valhalla change?

The change was made predominantly due to the climate of Louisville and the maintainance upkeep that the bentgrass required. Replacing it with a grass that requires less chemicals, water and labour means that the Zeon Zoysia is much easier to maintain for Valhalla grounds. The most notable change, which happened in 2021, has been the switch from bentgrass fairways to Zeon Zoysia grass. Faster and firmer fairways are the result of the 30 acres of fairway and teeing grounds the club have replaced with the fine-bladed turfgrass, which will place a premium on precision for those competing this week. The focus ahead of this year's Major was primarly centred on its fairways. While the changes to Valhalla since it was last staged the USA PGA in 2014 are far from dramatic, they will be noticeable and significant when the course hosts this championship for the fourth time in its history.

Many appeared delighted to see Valhalla's return and were willing to accept any disruption to the ride, which is not ready to open fully to the public. In turn understanding any "tweaks" still to be made to special effects, audio and other structural areas, with the purpose of technical rehearsals to iron out any issues that may occur. The ride is set to continue to undergo technical rehearsals over the coming days, before officially relaunching soon. Walking around chatting to different groups, it seems some people got a run through on Valhalla with only limited effects working. I guess we were lucky, as our ride was really good. Remember it is “technical rehearsals”. They are ironing out the kinks until it is perfect. Honestly, I'm not very impressed, it was dark and not a lot was happening in there. If this was my only visit to the Pleasure Beach this year and I wasn't aware of what a technical rehearsal was, then I'd think 'why the hell have they opened Valhalla?'

The unique dark ride and water ride hybrid was officially relaunched on 10 May, following a £4 million investment and a pandemic. Originally opened in 2000, at a cost of £15m, the attraction closed at the end of the 2019 season for refurbishment. “We’re delighted to finally be able to share a glimpse into all our hard work,” said Amanda Thompson OBE, Blackpool Pleasure Beach CEO, at the relaunch. Those who remember the original ride may recognise some of its best-loved features, but this reimagining of Valhalla offers a totally new immersive experience that will leave riders eager to return. As well as improving the ride experience, another goal of the refurbishment was to make Valhalla more energy efficient. This, of course, is an important consideration given the rising cost of energy bills.
