A woman fell through the boards of Central Pier and landed on the beach. Structural surveys of the decking of all three of Blackpool’s piers have now been completed following an incident last month when a woman fell around 30 feet from Central Pier. The woman received initial treatment for her injuries before being extricated and taken to hospital. Stephen Taylor, a friend of the woman, has publicly revealed the woman was treated for spinal injuries and a broken elbow. Central Pier was initially closed after the incident but re-opened on Friday, August 9. North and South piers continued to operate as normal. A health and safety investigation into the incident on August 6 was continuing.

A recently widowed woman has had surgery on her spine and elbow after plunging through a hole in Blackpool Central Pier and falling more than 30 feet. The woman was queuing for a fairground ride with two children when the accident happened and she fell more than 30 feet onto the sand at around 4pm. It is believed she went through a service hole that would normally be covered up and has since been boarded over. Witnesses told of hearing a horrific thud as the woman fell and photos from the scene showed a gaping hole in the pier following the incident. Emergency services raced to the scene and the pier was evacuated while they treated the woman, aged in her 50s, on August 6. The woman suffered spinal injuries and sustained fractures to ribs, multiple vertebrae and her elbow. The service hole that would normally be covered up has since been boarded over. An investigation is now underway and Blackpool City Council has requested support from the Health and Safety Executive to find out how it could have occurred. The Pier reopened on Friday following a structural survey and necessary remedial works being completed.

Emergency services were called and onlookers rushed to helped after a woman, in her 50s, appeared to fall through a section of the pier at around 4.30pm yesterday. The pier was evacuated as a result of the incident and the extent of the woman’s injuries is not clear. We have received a report of a woman having fallen through a section of the pier in Blackpool at around 4.30pm today. The woman has been taken to hospital with injuries. The pier is currently closed. At 16:33, the team was called out after an individual sustained injuries in a fall at central pier. The team supported North West Air Ambulance Charity paramedics who arrived by road from their base at Blackpool airport and Blackpool beach patrol, before extracting the casualty on our stretcher with the help of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to an ambulance where they were taken to the next level of care. The team also assisted in the evacuation of the pier and maintained a perimeter while the area was made safe before standing down at 18:45.
