The Fun House was a fixture at the seaside theme park for more than five decades before being destroyed in a huge fire in 1991. The fire was reportedly first spotted by a pizza delivery man, while staff in the fairground had been evacuated due to a firebomb threat four hours earlier. However, the damage was devastating and the Fun House, which first opened in 1934, was not to be saved. Witnesses claimed that flames, which could be seen miles away, reached 100ft high as they took hold of the Fun House late at night. Eighty firefighters were sent to the scene and had the blaze, under control by around 1am. The overall damage from the fire was estimated at £10million. An iconic Blackpool Pleasure Beach attraction where visitors spent hours closed down 30 years ago this week.

A fire broke out on Blackpool Pleasure Beach last night, damaging the Grand National wooden rollercoaster. The majority of the fire damage occurred to the Grand National station. A small part of the Grand National track was also affected along with carriages on adjacent rides. The park was closed to the public at the time of the blaze. BPB is open for business as usual today, from 1pm, but a full investigation will take place into the cause of the fire. The fire brigade acted very swiftly and got the fire under control.

It was also the year when the Fun House burned to the ground. Blackpool in 1991 was a year in history with some memories our town would rather forget. The resort was targeted by IRA terrorists which littered the town centre with firebombs causing fires and damage.
