The catastrophic fire which engulfed Fleetwood Pier in 1952 was so fierce it was reportedly seen up to 20 miles away, in Barrow, across Morecambe Bay. The fire started in the pier cinema – which had been added in 1942. Fleetwood Pier fire was of such a colossal nature, it wasn’t until 1958 the full extent of the structure could be used again. The fire left a tangled network of steel girders and charred beams. Coins in the slot machines on the pier were heated to such an extent they welded into long strings of copper and fell to the sands below. Damage was estimated at £75,000. Flames leapt to the sky as the intense fire gripped the pier structure.

Three fire crews from Blackpool, South Shore and Bispham were called out at 3.19am to reports of a fire at Central Pier. The fire has caused extensive damage to the Waltzer ride, as well as a workshop and the pier itself. Firefighters at the scene said the pier itself was 'well-alight' when they arrived, but "outstanding team work brought the fire swiftly under control". A nearby workshop has also been gutted by the fire, and a small shop has also suffered damage. The Big Wheel is not damaged, but the iconic ride had been shrouded in black smoke as dawn broke over the coast this morning.
