Fire investigators were unable to find the exact cause of the fire so officially it remains unknown. It is however thought to be two cases of arson. The first fire on 28th March destroyed the Pavilion. The second fire on 11th and 12th May 2003 was more intense and consumed what was left - the remains of the Concert Hall. Two seperate fires which are thought to be deliberate cases of arson took place in March and May 2003.

Today marks 20 years since the West Pier erupted in flames following an arson attack. The blaze marked one of the final nails in the coffin for the Grade I listed pier, which had fallen into a state of disrepair over several decades. On March 28, 2003, coastguard helicopters, lifeboats, police and firefighters were called to the pier after it burst into flames. A second suspicious fire ripped through the structure on May 11, with the pier’s last surviving kiosk swept away in a storm in December 2005. Tragedy struck in December 2002, when the pier partially collapsed during a storm, sending the pavilion tumbling into the sea. The complete destruction of the pier left restoration plans in tatters. Police issue statement on arson investigations.

We all knew it was arson. Nobody has ever been held responsible for the suspected arson attack, which also dashed hopes that the pier would be restored to its former glory.

The owners of the Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare discovered this to their cost in 2008 when a fire broke out following an electrical fault. The alarm went off as it should do at 1.35am but the emergency services were not called until 7am, allowing the fire to take hold and eventually burn down the entire structure. The fire broke out following an electrical fault. When the pier underwent a £51 million rebuild in 2010, Sovereign were selected to install and maintain a new fire system that could protect huge numbers of visitors, the pier’s employees and, ultimately, one of the west country’s landmark buildings.
