At approximately 03:00am this morning on Central Pier Blackpool, a fire broke out near the pier rides. A fairground ride was destroyed in the fire on Blackpool Central Pier overnight. Central Pier has suffered from fire damage in the past. It destroyed the Dixieland Showbar in 1973. The fire was extensive and quickly took ablaze to the iconic waltzer ride and pier workshop area. A workshop and a ride blazing, about half way along the pier, at around 3am on 17 July 2020. Britain’s seaside piers are no stranger to fire risk, many of them have suffered at some point, sadly some have been lost forever to the flames. Central Pier will remain closed for today, Friday 17th July, however we have been informed by the fire authorities that the main arcade can re-open from 14:30 along with the outdoor Terrace Bar.

The fire involved a workshop and a ride that are approximately halfway along the Central Pier. Flames engulfed part of Blackpool's 152-year-old Central Pier as 50 firefighters battled the inferno and witnesses feared the entire landmark would be destroyed. The Central Pier is one of three and is situated close to the now defunct Blackpool Central railway station and around 550 yards south of Blackpool Tower. A spokesperson for the Blackpool Pier Company, which manages the Central Pier, said the Sedgwick family, the firm's owners, said: “The family are devastated and shocked, but thankful for no casualties and the quick response and diligent efforts of the fire authority and our staff for raising the alarm. The pier cannot reopen until debris is cleared and it is deemed safe. The Central Pier, which opened in 1868, has been ravaged by a number of fires in recent decades. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze and save the pier.

A blaze broke out at Blackpool's historic Central Pier this morning, with around 50 firefighters and ten engines rushing to the scene to bring it under control. Three fire crews from Blackpool, South Shore and Bispham were called out at 3.19am to reports of a fire at Central Pier. Upon arrival, they found a workshop and a ride completely engulfed in flames about half-way along the pier. The fire has caused extensive damage to the Waltzer ride, as well as a workshop and the pier itself. Pictures from the scene show extensive damage to the fire-hit area, with the Waltzer completely destroyed. Firefighters at the scene said the pier itself was 'well-alight' when they arrived, but "outstanding team work brought the fire swiftly under control". A nearby workshop has also been gutted by the fire, and a small shop has also suffered damage. The Big Wheel is not damaged, but the iconic ride had been shrouded in black smoke as dawn broke over the coast this morning. Blackpool Council has commented, but only to confirm the facts of the incident, stating "There has been a fire at Central Pier. Lancashire Fire and Rescue are in attendance and all flames have been dampened down."

The pier, now known as South Pier was built 30 years later. At around 3:00 a.m. on 17 July 2020, just a week after the pier reopened from the first COVID-19 lockdown, a fire broke out and destroyed a fairground ride. The Central Pier caught fire in July 2020, destroying a fairground ride and damaging an engineering shed halfway along the pier. The pier has suffered relatively little damage save for fires in 1964 and 1973 which gutted the theatre buildings. None of these sentences mention South Pier burning down, they only mention Central Pier and a pier that is now known as South Pier, but was built 30 years after Central Pier.

The catastrophic fire which engulfed Fleetwood Pier in 1952 was so fierce it was reportedly seen up to 20 miles away, in Barrow, across Morecambe Bay. Fleetwood Pier Fire. The fire started in the pier cinema – which had been added in 1942. Coins in the slot machines on the pier were heated to such an extent they welded into long strings of copper and fell to the sands below. The fire left a tangled network of steel girders and charred beams. It was of such a colossal nature, it wasn’t until 1958 the full extent of the structure could be used again. Damage was estimated at £75,000. Flames leapt to the sky as the intense fire gripped the pier structure. The blaze could be seen as far away as Barrow-in-Furness. At 429ft in length, it was one of the shortest piers in the country. This photos shows how the intense heat wrecked the structure to such a devastating extent.
