Alderman Bean could never have envisaged that millions of people, both young and old, would experience unbridled happiness from this fantastical idea. In the 1930s, Leonard Thompson succeeded his father-in-law to become Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach and took over the running of the park. Geoffrey Thompson became Managing Director in 1976 and added exciting iconic rides including the Steeplechase, opened by the racehorse Red Rum in 1977. In 2004 Amanda Thompson OBE became Managing Director and invested £5m in the park with re-theming and refurbishment.

Pleasure Beach Resort in Blackpool has been named as one of the best family-owned theme parks in the world – and is the only UK attraction to make the cut. Many of Pleasure Beach’s UK competitors, including Alton Towers and Thorpe Park, are corporate-owned and part of larger groups. CEO of Pleasure Beach Resort, Amanda Thompson OBE, said: “We’re honoured to be recognised as one of the best family-owned theme parks in the world, and the only UK park to make the list. My great grandfather founded Pleasure Beach and it has remained in our family ever since, where we continue to keep his passion for innovation and entertainment at the heart of everything we do.
