Grove House was built in 1745 and was the home of Victorian inventor, philanthropist, and mayor Samson Fox. The 18th century, grade II listed Grove House has often been hailed as one of the town’s greatest hidden jewels with its stunning interiors, grand hall and stained glass windows. Steeped in history, Grove House became a hospital during the First World War and then the national headquarters of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes. Located off Skipton Road, it is part of a major plan Yorkshire-based care home company, Springfield Healthcare to create high quality facilities for residents, with extensive community use. The six-acre site was first bought by the CEO of Springfield Healthcare, Graeme Lee in 2017.

The title of oldest building goes to Kennel Hall Farm. These old farmhouses date back to the 17th century, at a time when large parts of the area were being rebuilt. According to a plaque outside the property, it was used to house Parliamentary soldiers from Oliver Cromwell’s regiment during the English Civil War. In the beautiful, historic borough of Harrogate, there are over 2000 listed buildings. The Old Swan Hotel has been housing guests since 1777, and is a fascinating part of Harrogate’s history. However, Kennel Hall Farm is specifically noted for being the oldest building, with its history dating back to the 17th century. The Old Swan Hotel is older than many of the other listed buildings, but not the oldest. Kennel Hall Farm stands out as a significant example of an old building in Harrogate.

They were built in 1868 by textile manufacture George Rogers, whose business was in Bradford but who had a close connection to Harrogate and intended as houses for elderly people from either place. In contrast to Georgian Bath and Regency Cheltenham, Harrogate came into fashion in the second half of the 19th century, so much of its architecture is Victorian.
