It started with a friend’s offhand comment about women during the siege of Leningrad. I knew very little about modern day St. Petersburg, next to nothing about Leningrad, and absolutely nothing about how the city fared during World War II. Once I read my first account of the siege, I was hooked. The survivors’ stories literally clawed their way into my heart and there they remain. It’s true that mothers put their children on trains, with their names pinned to their coats, with no real idea where those trains were going and when they would see their children again, if ever. It’s true that several of those trains were sent directly into German troops and bombed. It’s also true that Leningrad became a city of women during the siege—men, except for the very young and the very old—were off to fight the Germans. In writing Winter Garden, it was my goal to take this epic, tragic event and personalize it as much as possible. I wanted to give you all this story of survival and loss, horror and heartache in a way that would allow you to experience it with some measure of emotion.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. The book isn’t really about Christmas, nor is the story all that happy for the majority of it, but it will wow you. “Winter Garden” may give off the air of a romance novel but as far as genres go, it is listed under Women’s Fiction. “Winter Garden” is a story that builds in rich layers of complexity and emotional depth in such a way that it is absolutely worth it to stick with the story. There is an undercurrent to the story that pulls you deeper and just keeps growing stronger. Because of this, the impact and delivery of both the second half of the book–and especially the ending–will hit you hard. As the daughters learn more about their mother, one of the daughters–Nina–realizes that her own journey of self-discovery has never come to fruition because she had been searching for her own truth. It is through her mother’s story that she realizes that truth. In the end, I believe the “Winter Garden” is a journey of self-discovery. Meredith and Nina discover the true story of their mother’s life but also truths about their own lives. Anya reveals heartbreaking truths about her life, which in turn helps her to realize that keeping her secrets wasn’t helping anyone.

Each book is based on a true historical time period, but told in a fictional sense. The fairytale was based on Vera and her family living in the time of War in Leningrad. Reading about the war and the things they had to go through was rough. People being bombed on the streets. Women being separated from their children. Sending their children with strangers just as an attempt to keep them safe from the horrible times they were going through. Starvation, sickness, with little to no means of food or medicine. Leaving loved ones to die alone.
