Every fairground and pleasure park worth its salt has a ghost train of one sort or another but Blackpool has the original. Opened in 1930, this was the world’s first Ghost Train and it is still going strong after over 90 years, providing thrill-seekers with screams aplenty and blood-curdling wails at every turn. Pretzel rides were becoming very popular in the USA in the 1920s and at the time, Blackpool Pleasure Beach decided to bring one to the UK and named it the ‘Ghost Train’ after a play which was popular at the time. The Blackpool version relies on many special effects using luminescent paint throughout, lit by backing-lighting. The ride starts at an open station which is lavishly decorated with witches, trolls and other associated monsters, before the train takes passengers on a journey of horror with frightening visions including a victim encased in a cog wheel as well as spiders, webs, skeleton cyclists and other ghoulish apparitions.
Ghost Trains are supposed to scare and this one does it exceedingly well. Blackpool’s Ghost Train does its job remarkably well and as such, we give it a thrill rating of 2.8.
As well as fake ghosts, there is rumoured to be a real ghost lurking somewhere in Blackpool’s Ghost Train.
The ride itself isn’t scary but the ghouls and monsters may well give little kids a few sleepless nights. This is one for the kids and the big kids, hardly thrilling in the true sense of the word but nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable experience, if you like that sort of thing!

Pleasure Beach Resort in Blackpool is one of the country's best-loved seaside attractions. The award-winning seaside theme park, which is just as popular in the colder months of the year, claims to be home to the most haunted ghost train in the world. The Ghost Train at Blackpool's Pleasure Beach Resort first opened to the public in 1930 and remains in operation to this day. The Ghost Train will form one of the four scare zones at Pleasure Beach Resort’s Journey to Hell event. Still in use today, the Ghost train will be part of this event, featuring live actors through themed areas of Pleasure Beach Resort. The resort's network tunnels will become home to a live-action scare zone, including The Ghost Train: Vault of Shadows, which returns for the second year.
The Ghost Train is said to be haunted by a clog-wearing spirit aptly named 'Cloggy', who died 20 years ago and was one of the ride's original operators. Cloggy, who always wore clogs, earned his nickname and after he passed away, guests reported being touched or grabbed by someone - or something - they could only hear. Other parts of the seaside theme park are also said to be haunted, including Hiram Maxim's Flying Machines, the park's oldest ride, where a ghostly little girl is said to haunt the ride's gift shop.

Ghost Train is a dark ride attraction at Pleasure Beach Resort, in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. It opened in 1930 as a single deck 'Pretzel' ride but was rebuilt and designed as an Art Deco double deck in 1936 by Joseph Emberton. Notably by Joeseph Emberton in 1936 and again in 1957 by Jack Ratcliff, where it was moved up slightly from its original location to accommodate the Wild Mouse. This is the version we see today although originally it was not themed at all. It finally got a makeover with 'castle' theming in 1973 and a large skeleton on the top. The ride has an open station, which is decorated with different creatures such as trolls, ghosts and witches. The ride travels through the first section of scenes including a victim engulfed in cog wheels before going down a small drop in the station area and pulling up again to go into the second section featuring spiders, an exorcist girl in her bedroom and 3 skeleton cyclists. A whole section of the ride was changed from an Egyptian scene with a mummy and a spike coffin to a forest with corpses strapped to a gate and some snake-like creatures.
