Southport Central was a railway station in Southport, Lancashire, England. It was opened on 4 September 1882 as the terminus of the West Lancashire Railway from Preston. Southport Central closed to passengers on 1 May 1901 when all services were transferred to the nearby Southport Chapel Street station. It remained in use as a goods depot until 3 December 1973. The old station has subsequently been demolished and is now a supermarket car park.

The station operated until 1969 when it was deemed surplus to requirements and closed, due to increased car-use and changes in the surrounding rail network. Manchester Central began life as one of the major train station hubs of the North West. Opening in 1880, Central Station went on to become one of the country’s great travel interchanges. After closing, the building escaped demolition and was given listed building status, but then stood largely unused and derelict for almost 20 years.

It just managed to see it’s centenary before it was to close in 1964. Controversially on 1 November 1964, and by order of the Corporation, Stationmaster JW Atkinson finally locked it up that night. The last train left Blackpool Central at 9.55pm and the last arrival was at 11.30pm. Central Engine Sheds had already closed on 30 July 1964. The direct Marton line finally closed in 1965. Then all the remaining station buildings finally went, demolished in 1973. The station opened in 1863 as Hounds Hill and was renamed Blackpool Central in 1878.

Liverpool Central High Level station was demolished in 1973. The original Central Station high level terminal opened in 1874, but the station we know today was redeveloped and opened in 1977, replacing both high and low level terminal stations. The new look station opened on May 2, 1977, initially as a terminus for trains from Southport, Ormskisk and Kirkby. A week later, the deep Level platform opened serving Wirral line trains. Before it reopened in 1977, the three-storey station fronted Ranelagh Street and had a 65-foot high, arched iron and glass train shed at the rear. The station in years gone by is unrecognisable to the one they have come to know today. Serving both the Wirral and Northern lines on the Merseyrail network, the city centre railway station opened in 1874 and has gone on to become the busiest station in Liverpool.
