The coast is a popular holiday destination for families and there is no chance this trend is ever going to end, us Brits just love a beach holiday and spending time beside the seaside. With so much to do and many coastal locations situated in the UK - we have put together a list of 10 reasons why the coast makes for the perfect holiday destination. Of course, number one had to be the beach - the sand between your toes and the crashing waves, there nothing like it. Many beaches have surfing shops close by that will have wetsuits and surfboards to hire as well as offering lessons for beginners. There are many different iconic and famous piers in our seaside towns and visiting them is a must. Including many different attractions for all the family such as amusements, fair rides and places to eat. A visit to the pier is always a fun-filled and educational way to spend the day as well as a relaxing evening with beautiful views of the sea. This really needs no explanation other than the fact everyone loves a good portion of freshly sourced fish with some chips when by the seaside. You won't get a better taste anywhere else. The beautiful walks you can go on through the soft sand and grassy headlines, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the stunning views the seaside always has to offer.

The British seaside is a national institution. The name of the Flake ‘99’ ice cream has nothing to do with its price. Six miles long and using over one million light bulbs, the Blackpool Illuminations first began in 1879. Britain’s first illuminations belonged to Morecambe, which was also the birthplace of Bingo and rivalled Blackpool as the northern English seaside resort from the late 1880s. But which town was Britain’s first seaside resort, that was Weymouth, where in 1789 King George III started a fashion for sunbathing there. ‘Oh I do Like to Be Beside the Seaside’ was made famous by the music hall performer Mark Sheridan who first recorded the song in 1909. The ancient Punch and Judy show became a Victorian seaside favourite, its enduring popularity is largely due to its ability to adapt to the times.

It’s because it’s just so good for the soul. Whether you head to Scarborough, Southend-on-Sea or the east coast of the USA, there’s something about being at the seaside that blows the stressful cobwebs of life away. You can’t deny that being by the water is so incredibly soothing. Being at the seaside in particular, I just love to watch the waves coming in, lapping the shore and then heading back out again. It’s almost therapeutic, especially when you’re feeling stressed or anxious. Breathing in the fresh sea air has a positive effect on your physical health, clearing your lungs and making you feel re-energised. There’s something truly wonderful about having the sun shine on your face, with the sand between your toes and the sound of the ocean nearby. It makes you feel… Well, alive. A Change of Scenery is Often Needed, if you’re like me and you’re not one of the lucky people who live near the seaside, you just really appreciate the change of scenery every once in a while. Why is the seaside so popular then, Well, to summarise, it’s just SO GOOD for the soul.
