Blackpool Council is working closely with the Environment Agency, as well as the wider Fylde Peninsula Water Management Partnership to ensure our waters continue to meet the new standards. The council also has a legal responsibility under the contaminated land investigation process to stop the pollution of controlled waters. Bathing water is effected by a variety of sources; incorrect disposable of cooking fats, sanitary products and other hygiene products such as wetwipes can cause blockages. Put litter in the bin, thinking about what you flush down the to, pick up after your. There are four stretches of the Blackpool coast that are designated bathing waters, and eight across the Fylde coast. Each of these sites are monitored the by Environment Agency during the bathing season, which runs from May to September, taking 20 samples at each site every year. These sites must meet European guidelines of water quality, with the aim of protecting the health of people who may want to swim, paddle or even just splash and play there.

Clearly lots of work has gone in and is going into cleaning up and keeping clean the ocean and beach. The beach is glorious in places. Beautifully clean beach with a good presence of life guards. This lovely long beach is a hub of entertainment. Just mind the seagulls. The beaches are picturesque especially on a sunny day. Good lifeguard and RNLI presence. Limited facilities in parts but given the piers and nearby bars/restaurants and shops there are always some toilet facilities etc you can use nearby.

There are no overflows impacting this beach. There are no overflows currently identified by either ourselves or the Environment Agency that have the potential to impact the bathing water. Any bacteria in the bathing water could be from other sources, for example agricultural rainwater runoff, dog or bird faeces, private sewerage or property foul waste pipes being misconnected and draining to watercourses. Bacteria levels may be higher after rainfall. The graphs below show the significant reduction in harmful bacteria in the Environment Agency’s (EA) water samples since the 1990s. E. coli and Intestinal Enterococci exist in all open water - they are found in human and animal poo, and get into the water via sewage spills, road drainage, agricultural livestock, or wildlife and birds.

There were two beaches, St. Annes North and Blackpool North, in the Lancashire-14 area classified as having poor water quality in 2024. None of the beaches in Lancashire was classified as excellent, four were classified as good, four only reached the 'sufficient' standard, while the beaches at St Annes North and Blackpool North remained at the 'poor' standard. St Annes North and Blackpool North were the only beaches in the North West to be classed as poor and were two out of only 22 in the whole of England. The classifications are based on a rolling average over four years, rather than just the last complete year of measurements which the previous classifications used. Blackpool South had won the Blue Flag award for three years running from 2016 to 2018 while been the only winner in the North West region. The Seaside Awards showed 10 winners in Lancashire, including Bispham, Blackpool Central and South. Overall the results for Lancashire beaches in 2024 were disappointing when compared with 2021. Four out the ten beaches in Lancashire and Blackpool were classified as having good water quality in 2024. The only change from 2023 is that Morecambe South improved from sufficient to good.
