The first thing that struck us at Westover Hall at Milford-on-Sea was the stained-glass windows. There were depictions of maidens riding horses through forests, nymphs in glades and knights standing before castles. Soft emerald, lemon and pastel- blue light shone into reception, with its oak-panelled walls, high ceiling and gallery looking down from above. Staff stood sentry as though waiting for guests to drift down the grand staircase from one of the 15 rooms. There was an inviting lounge with a log fire, while in a separate room we glimpsed a tiny oak bar with bottles on shelves. What an unusual, almost surreal, setting, we thought, as a woman in black led us up the creaky stairs, explaining that the theatrical windows were the idea.

The house was built in 1897 for electricity pioneer Alexander Siemens. He called it Westover but the family referred to their holiday home as ‘the beach house’. The architect was Arnold Mitchell. After Siemens died here in 1928, the house was bought by motor pioneer Lord Nuffield who stayed in 1930 to 1932. What is now a Hall & Woodhouse pub was until recently one of the UK’s top fifty hotels. The building became a pub in 2012.

The Grade II listed Beach House was built in 1897 for Alexander Siemens as a summer house for his family. Formerly known as Westover Hall, Hall & Woodhouse brewery renamed it ‘The Beach House’ in 2012 to reflect how the Siemens family had always used it. Built in the Arts and Crafts style it was judged the most luxurious residence on England’s south coast and indeed the imposing stained glass windows portray Pre-Raphaelite scenes from The Enchanted Wood can still be viewed from the bar area today.

The Beach House was originally known as Westover. The Beach House was built by the Siemens family over 100 years ago and later sold to the Morris family. It is not clear from the opening section and the closing section exactly what the house was originally named and when any changes took place. Should it have read at the end that the house reverted to its original name given by Siemens ie. Westover as opposed to it being renamed. The article about the house Alexander Siemens had built is interesting but, there is a confusing element about the name of the house.
