While it does not mean you need to scrub cuts in ocean water—remember these possible contaminants—it suggests salt is effective for health purposes. The healing abilities of the sea continue to inspire our minds and soul to relax and rejuvenate. Some reported enhancing skin conditions during a swimming trip. Historically seawater is known to cure both bodily and soul ailments. The National Institute for Health recommends using salty or saline solution (salt water) or soapy water to clean the surgical wound. You can remember when your mother said you should wash the cut from ocean water. However, if you have an open wound, it's especially important to be careful, as salt water can further irritate the wound and delay healing. The main danger is contamination, or to be more precise - ocean bacteria, these contaminants can cause skin infections, stomach flu, and respiratory illnesses.

The sea is health, my mother would say to encourage me to swim and float in the sea. The nature of our bodies mirrors our marine origin, chemical analysis verifies that the same salts – potassium, calcium, magnesium – are found in equal proportions in sea water and the blood plasma of human beings. For osmotic absorption to take place and the minerals present in the marine environment to penetrate the skin, a water temperature of between 95 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. They can improve blood circulation and our well-being. In order to fully absorb the healthy minerals and trace elements that salty seawater provides, it’s best to aim for a minimum of 12 minutes of soaking time. Ideally, you want to soak for 18 to 20 minutes, though, this helps balance the fluids in the body and increases osmotic absorption. Magnesium may help protect the skin’s barrier and offer antioxidant benefits that protect the skin against free radicals, in addition, it helps with muscle and joint pain, promotes muscle relaxation and improves rest. Salt baths have been used for hundreds of years to treat skin pathologies.

Ocean water, albeit salty, is water. You can bathe with it, wash clothes with it, wash dishes with it etc. Soap behaves differently but you'll still get things cleaner than they were. As for bathing, the obvious downside is you will have salt on your skin when you dry. For some this isn't an issue. For others this can be an irritant. The ocean is vast, you washing your clothes/dishes in it as an individual camper / kayaker is not going to matter.
