To survive a boring holiday, having a drink can be helpful, and it's even more fun to have another drink. Drinking is fun, and it will also help you cope with all the hammered people talking about their first triathlon or how much they hate their boss. Treat the party like a competition with yourself, and pretend that you are on a TV show where it is your job to get party-goers to confide something to you in as little time as possible. You can ask people what they think the scariest movie is, as talking about why a particular movie scared them to death animates people in a remarkable way. Bring up The Shining, and discuss whether it is the most terrifying movie to ever exist, or ask people about famous people with colorful personalities, like Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. You can also ask your conversation partner what they normally eat for lunch, as this question can lead to learning about creative budget-friendly recipes or good lunch options in your city. If all else fails, excuse yourself to go pet the dog, as dogs are always good and interesting, no matter what.

Start a creative project, have you been working on a creative project for a while that you just can't find the time for during your studies, just like me? This is your chance. Painting, drawing, sculpting, making your own jewellery or photography are also perfect ways to bring out your creative side. Try out new recipes, I get it: during the academic year, you don't always have the time and energy to try out new recipes. During the summer vacation, these excuses no longer apply: you have all the time to try out new recipes. Learn a new language, always wanted to learn Spanish, Italian, Dutch or another new language? With apps like Duolingo, this can become a reality this summer. Meet up with friends, being bored together is better than being bored alone, right? Message your friends and plan a picnic, game night or movie marathon. Relax, and finally, use your time in the summer vacation to do nothing at all every once in a while. You don't need to have an activity planned every day! Take some days to sleep in late, binge-watch a series, lie in the sun all day or relax in other ways, without feeling guilty about not doing anything productive.

Although going on holiday is great fun most of the time, there are often moments when it can be boring. Firstly, why not take some photos to document your journey, or take some snaps of your accommodation? Whilst you might not think the journey is particularly interesting when you’re travelling, it’ll be nice to reminisce with photos when you’re back at home, and your holiday feels like a lifetime ago. Reading is also a great way to pass time on holiday, as once you get engrossed in something, time passes so much faster. Another way to pass time, is to simply relax and listen to some music. Maybe take a nap. If you’re travelling with others, it might be a good idea to take an old-fashioned packet of cards with you. Just bask in that moment of boredom. You’re lucky enough to be on holiday so you should appreciate it and enjoy the boredom – it’s a luxury really.
