The circus hasn’t used animals since 1990, but deep beneath the circus ring, the stables and pens used to house the creatures still remain due to the building’s listed status. It was common for locals to see the animals, which included elephants and horses, going for a morning walk along the beach, which definitely turned some heads.

The circus has been animal free since 1990, choosing instead to showcase its clowns and human performers. But before then, the Circus featured wild animals performing in the ring which included lions, tigers, polar bears and elephants. Of course, these animals had to stay somewhere during the events and the cages and pens where they were kept beneath the Arena are still in existence today. Dating back to 1894, it has been a staple of the Tower, and the resort, for many years. The Tower Circus was opened on May 14 1894 and at this time, admission to the event was only a sixpence. Although the evidence of animal performer still exist, today the Tower Circus chooses to use human performers. In fact, it was commonplace for locals to see the animals going for a morning walk along the beach.

Don’t worry the newly constructed glass floor and window which came following Merlin’s 10-month multimillion-pound refurbishment in 2011 can now hold the weight of two elephants, so no need to be scared.
