Blackpool escaped being blitzed during the Second World War because Hitler wanted to use the resort as his personal playground. The Fuhrer planned to watch his triumphant troops goosestepping down the seafront's Golden Mile before unfurling the swastika flag on top of Blackpool Tower. The plan to spare Blackpool made little military sense. Hundreds of the RAF's Wellington bombers were built in the town and thousands of troops went on leave there. But it escaped almost unscathed from the Luftwaffe's bombing blitz. The reason has now been explained in documents recovered from an old German military base. They clearly show that Blackpool Tower and the resort's three piers were not to be damaged in air raids, by order of the Fuhrer. He probably wanted to keep the resort exactly as it was so he could enjoy it as Chancellor of Britain.

The plan explains why Blackpool escaped almost unscathed from the Luftwaffe's bombing blitz despite the fact the RAF built hundreds of Wellington bombers in the town and thousands of troops went on leave there. His invasion plans of Great Britain included making the Lancashire resort a headquarters for his paratroopers and also a playground for him and his men. He probably wanted to keep the resort as it was so he could enjoy it as Chancellor of Britain. We did escape a lot of the bombing despite the fact so many troops were in the town and there were major aircraft manufacturing factories here. It had been known that Hitler intended to use Blackpool as his personal playground after what he hoped to be a successful invasion and the war ended.

Maps and aerial photographs found in a military base in Germany by Michael Cole, a publisher in York, purportedly reveal Hitler's grand design for Blackpool, which may explain why it was spared the fate of such cities as Coventry, which suffered massive bombing damage in 1940. The marked maps and photographs were seen by Hitler when his plans to invade Britain were at their height. Elaine Smith, of Blackpool's civic trust, said: We did escape a lot of bombing. Hitler probably wanted to keep the resort as it was to enjoy it as chancellor of Britain. Adolf Hitler wanted his stormtroopers to goose-step down Blackpool's golden mile and see the swastika fly from Blackpool tower, according to newly released documents. The Lancashire seaside resort escaped the Lutwaffe's bombing raids despite being an important military centre during the second world war.
