Blackpool Pleasure Beach has been a feature beside the beach at Blackpool since it was founded in 1896 by William George Bean. The oldest surviving ride is Sir Hiram Maxim's Captive Flying Machines, which have been operating at the park since 1904. Other classics include wooden rollercoasters like Big Dipper, which opened in 1923, and Rollercoaster, which opened in 1933, now renamed Nickelodeon Streak. Grand National, a racing woodie, opened in 1935. Blackpool's Ghost Train is the first ghost train in the world. The park has a number of old rides, including the River Caves, which is a classic boat ride past scenes from around the world, and the Grand Prix, which is a motor racing car ride. The Pleasure Beach Express is a miniature train ride and the Blue Flyer is a children's wooden rollercoaster.

The journey from the opening of Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 1896 to the present day, has been an incredible ride. August 1904 saw the launch of the ever-popular Sir Hiram Maxim Captive Flying Machine - the oldest continuous working amusement park ride not only in Blackpool Pleasure Beach but in Europe too. The 1920’s saw a period of great development with the opening of Noah’s Ark and The Virginia Reel. This was followed on 23 August 1923 by the classic Big Dipper wooden rollercoaster offering holidaymakers a fast and modern ride like no other on the park. It is still in operation today. In the 1930’s, the decade saw the introduction of many new rides including The Rollercoaster, The Pleasure Beach Express and the world-famous, twin-tracked coaster, The Grand National. The Big Dipper and Sir Hiram Maxim Captive Flying Machine are among the oldest continuous working amusement park rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Blackpool's Big Dipper is the oldest operating rollercoaster at the Pleasure Beach, and the second oldest operating coaster in the UK after the Scenic Railway at Dreamland in Margate. It was originally constructed in 1923 by William Strickler from a design by the legendary John A Miller. One of Blackpool's classic woodies, and the first in Europe to use under-friction wheels. Big Dipper still holds its rightful place at Blackpool Pleasure Beach as one of the park's collection of classic woodies. Even though it doesn't provide a smooth ride anymore, it is still an astonishing ride full of character that has been thrilling riders for just short of a century. Blackpool's Big Dipper was built in 1923. Subsequently, the original track was extended by Charlie Paige and Joe Emberton in 1936.
